The MBBC Leos Club has celebrated its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of community service, leadership development and charitable impact.
Students, alumni, Lions Club members, staff and community supporters gathered on 13 August to commemorate the milestone and reflect on the club's lasting contribution to both the College and wider community.
The MBBC Leos Club was established in 2006 through the vision of a group of students and former MBBC teacher Councillor Alex Givney. Guided by a commitment to service and leadership, the club has grown into one of the College's most enduring student organisations.
As part of the celebration, attendees viewed the original International Association of Lions Clubs Certificate of Organisation, signed when the club was established, and acknowledged the founding members whose efforts created a legacy that continues today.
As the club celebrates its 20th anniversary, it does so following one of the most successful years in its history. Earlier this year, the MBBC Leos Club was named 2024-25 Leo Club of the Year, recognising the exceptional commitment to service, leadership and community involvement demonstrated by its members.
Over the past two decades, MBBC Leos have contributed thousands of volunteer hours through community projects, fundraising initiatives and charitable campaigns. One of the club's most meaningful long-term commitments has been its support of Humphrey Ndemfoo Tarimo, a student at The School of St Jude in Tanzania. Through ongoing sponsorship, the club has helped provide educational opportunities while connecting students with a global cause.
The anniversary also recognised the impact of the club's 2025 fundraising efforts, which enabled donations of $900 each to four charitable organisations:
- Camp Quality
- Animal Welfare League Queensland
- Lifeline Australia
- Pankind, The Australian Pancreatic Cancer Foundation
These donations support children and families facing illness, mental health services, animal welfare programs and vital medical research.
The celebration provided an opportunity to thank the many students, Lions Club mentors, families, sponsors and supporters who have contributed to the club's success over the past 20 years.
As the MBBC Leos Club enters its third decade, it continues to uphold the values on which it was founded: leadership, service, experience and opportunity. With a strong foundation and a proud history of giving back, the club looks forward to continuing to make a positive difference in the years ahead.
