This year the boys participated in the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad (Maths Olympiad). This is an annual contest and every year, schools from Australia, New Zealand and other neighbouring countries take part with over 64,000 students participating in 2020.
The boys have completed five separate contests held approximately one month apart with the aim for the students to develop their mathematical problem-solving skills. This year we had 21 boys participating in the Junior team (Year 5 and 6) and 21 boys in the Senior team (Year 5 and 6).
This competition not only draws up a student’s mathematical ability it also requires persistence, determination and resilience. Well done to all 42 boys who took part. A tremendous effort.
Friday 10 September saw a team a Year 5 students compete in the Junior Ethics Olympiad. This is an online event but requires a lot of preparation. The team have been working on discussing a range of six ethical cases to discuss with teams from across Australia and New Zealand. Despite some technical difficulties throughout the day with lots of other teams being in lockdown, our boys really enjoyed the opportunity to discuss what is right, what is wrong and what is ethically right and wrong. The boys worked so collaboratively during the day and were very considerate of each other and other teams. Some of the issues we discussed included Is it ok to lie? Is it ok to kill an ant? and a range of issues from the Lorax. Well done to the team!
As the boys were all reminded back in May, before they began their NAPLAN tests, NAPLAN is a measure of their literacy and numeracy skills at that particular moment in time.
NAPLAN is not a measure of their achievements across the year, of their engagement in their learning or of who they are as a person.
The boys were asked, that over the four days that NAPLAN was scheduled, to just do their best; at the end of each test, I hoped that they were happy with their efforts and, that when they got their results, that they were happy with their overall scores.
We all know that there is so much more to describe our MBBC boys as learners than the results they have achieved on their NAPLAN tests in 2021 – with all the ways that they can display their gifts and talents across the College through curricular and cocurricular opportunities – it is important that we all keep in mind the purpose of NAPLAN as a standardised test: to determine if educational outcomes have been achieved by students, and as a means for evaluating potential solutions with regard to policy and curriculum planning, from the national level all the way down to individual students.
Also, with this year being the first year that MBBC boys completed their NAPLAN tests using the online portal, we interested in how their knowledge and understanding would be showcased in the annual literacy and numeracy tests.
I am so very proud of the effects of our boys in Years 7 and 9 – in all the NAPLAN tests, our boys achieved above both the State and National mean. It was also interesting to see that when we performed an analysis on the NAPLAN mean scores over time, the boys continued to show growth with each NAPLAN test.
The data has indeed done what it was meant to, identified areas of growth and areas for improvement and, so our next step as MBBC teachers is to create action plans for how we will continue to help the boys of MBBC develop their literacy and numeracy skills so as to prepare them well for their senior academic studies.
Has your son ever considered learning violin or viola? The college has a number of smaller size violins and violas, currently unused, that would be ideal for Pre-Prep to Year 3 aged beginner strings students. These instruments are available for free loan to families who would like their son to try out string lessons during Term 4 or from the start of 2022. All you need to do is contact the Music Office (music@moretonbaycolleges.qld.edu.au) and we will assist you!
Thank you to all those students who have recently auditioned for positions in Term 4 into 2022 Music Ensembles. The audition process can be a bit nerve-wracking, but staff were impressed with the high standards and work put in by all our students to prepare and present the set and own-choice repertoire. Placing students in ensembles is a careful balancing act incorporating (among other considerations) performance at the audition, students’ preferences and nominations, juggling selections to create balanced instrumentation and part placement, and re-working rehearsal schedules to avoid overlap of memberships in multiple groups. Final placements will be published by the end of Term 3 so that rehearsals for our new groups can begin early in Term 4 (directly after current concert commitments at Viva and other awards ceremonies).
Once again, we look forward to our rock bands (Bayside Boys, Rockfuse, The Recruits, the Originals) performing on the outdoor stage at MBBC Carnival Day on Friday 17 September (the last day of term). It’s going to be a great way to end a busy but productive term, as well as forming the final performance for our 2021 ensemble groupings. Next term, we will re-start our rock bands in their 2022 formats – congratulations to all our students who have performed so well at the 2020 Muster, Twilight Picnic, Contemporary Concert and Carnival Day, we are really looking forward to what you will continue to achieve next year!
With one round of Term 3 sport remaining for some teams, it is time to say thank you. I would like to pay tribute to those involved in leading and facilitating our busy sports programme.
We have come a long way in the MBBC sporting landscape, and it has been extraordinary to see the boys engage in sports and activities this term. I wish to congratulate everyone involved – from ground staff, COVID-19 registration staff, coaches, programme leaders, administrative staff and the boys themselves. This term was all about the boys engaging with their peers and enjoying the competition and friendly rivalry.
I wish to focus my gratitude on our students, who have shown great pride in representing MBBC in Basketball, Football, Futsal, Mountain Biking, Tennis and Touch Football. They have done this while adapting to a challenging Academic programme and balancing a range of co-curricular and social pursuits.
To all our students who committed themselves to their many and varied co-curricular pursuits this term, thank you and congratulations on your achievement.
The College’s Mountain Biking team took out the title of Most Epic School for the 6th year in a row at the 99 Bikes Cycle Epic events at Hidden Vale Adventure Park, on Saturday 11 September. The team brought home prize money to the value of $1,000 for the Colleges MTB programme.
Riders faced long climbs and steep, root-filled descents that were more treacherous than usual. The course included 300 metres of elevation gain.
Congratulations to all the riders and a shout out to our podium placers.

We have been advised by some of our suppliers that our shipments will been delayed.
This is due to the continuing Covid outbreaks causing factory shutdowns and affecting supply chains.
This means that the factories are either shut down, working below capacity or are experiencing shortages of fabric etc.
It will be necessary to put purchasing limits onto many garments including Girl’s Dresses and Boy’s shirts.
We are in constant communication with the suppliers and they are keeping us informed of developments.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Please be assured that all the orders will eventually delivered and when this happens you will be advised and extra stock will be able to be purchased.

Feedback from the Parent Survey indicated that whilst Parents are broadly satisfied with communications, there are opportunities to improve how we share news and information with our families. Readership of the newsletter has been declining and thus we have looked at more effective ways to communicate the latest news on college life and college events.
Starting in Term 4 we will cease to produce the fortnightly newsletter. Instead, we will be issuing a Weekly Bulletin every Friday, delivered via email, which will include a snapshot of highlights from the previous week and key events for the following week.
Other content that was previously shared in the Newsletter, but does not go in the Bulletin, such as long form articles from College Leadership, Student Achievements, some P&F announcements and some Foundation updates will be shared via social media, web stories or the College App.
The Altitude magazine has been well received by current families and also by new families looking to join the college. Moving into next year we will have four editions of Altitude which will enable us to showcase our fabulous college life in more depth each term.
We trust that this new approach will enable you to access the information that is important to you more easily.
